When you set up the pendulum sweep by trapping his arm on your chest with a grip across his back, you create multiple options if you cannot complete the sweep. Depending on how he reacts with his free arm, you can attack the shotgun armbar on the trapped arm, attack the cutting armbar or omoplata on the farside arm, or you can armdrag him to the other side.
