To defend the pass to side control you must react to stop the opponent's weight from crushing your chest. If you get a grip on his nearside sleeve, you can execute a reversal before he can settle into the pass. You can also turn away and lift your hips high in the air before circling your leg around to the other side. Similarly, you use your knee to provide the space for inverting and then swing your leg back into a guard.
