When you pop your knee up in combat base, you can immediately use it to slide over the opponent's thigh. The side you choose to slide determines the type of knee cut. If it's on the the same side as your pass, it is the nearside knee cut pass (also known as staple pass). If it's on the cross side, it's the farside knee cut pass. This video shows you the difference required controls.
